Game on, Bangladesh!

Gaming, a word which holds huge value to every little gamers all over the world. We all, more or less, have played House of the dead with our siblings or GTA with our friends. The quarrel, the laughter, everything echoes through our head the moment we hear the word gaming. It’s a nostalgia that only brings a big smile on our faces and makes us feel the urge to go back and sit in front of the desktop screen to play the pixelated games, again and again. Although the majority of us have disconnected with the gaming world, some of us are still connected with it. They have not kept gaming locked inside their heart as a hobby, rather made it a profession. So today, we talk about the eSports community in Bangladesh.

When it comes to Bangladesh, it’s not wrong to say that the eSports community is still growing. Tournaments are held every now and then. The participation rate used to be very low and the same well-known teams used to win over and over again. However, Recently the community has been growing rapidly, thus participation in tournaments has increased by a lot. There used to be a time when the tournaments used to go unnoticed, but now they are making headlines. Recently, some big tournaments were held inside the country, which was unimaginable just a few years back. Some mentionable ones are BASIS eSports Championship 2023, Discovery One Cup Season 1 & 2, BESL( Bangladesh eSports League), Acer Predator League etc. which had different segments for the current popular games (Counter-Strike 2, VALORANT, MOBILE LEGENDS) in Bangladesh. The prize pool of these tournaments started from 7,00,000 BDT to 40,00,000 BDT.

Now hang on, every time we talk about gaming, the only possible participants which come to mind are always boys. But the girls of Bangladesh have been proving these stereotypes wrong by actively participating in every female tournament held inside the country. The girls have proved their potential, despite facing countless discrimination. Reminiscing from last year's BASIS eSports championship, an all-female line-up won the Valorant Female Lan Championship, breaking the barriers and inspiring a new generation of girl gamers. Team Celestials and Wasabi Sirens- two most popular female line-ups of Bangladesh, had a head to head battle in the finale, where Team Celestial won with a score-line of 2-1. The girls took home a prize of 40,000 BDT. It was the first ever Female Lan in Bangladesh, truly a historic event.

Bangladesh and eSports, these two words are finally starting to sound good together, right? But we are not done yet. We have yet to mention another category of gamers, who don't fall among the casual gamers nor the professional gamers. They are our very favorite streamers. Everytime a new game comes out, the first person that comes to mind who’ll try the game out and give honest feedback is the streamers. Although Bangladeshi streamers still have a long way to go, there are some popular streamers who have successfully made a name for themselves in the community through hard work. I’ll mention two personal favorites of mine, Lilzahzah (Zonaed Arefin Zahin) and Uziboozie. (Rimsha Iqbal). The list doesn’t end with these two though, it only starts. Bangladeshi streamers are working hard to make a name in the community, both inside and outside the country.

We did talk about the eSports community inside the country. However, can you imagine there’s someone from the country who has represented Bangladesh in front of the entire world? Sounds like a dream but open your eyes, we present you our golden boy, SSSami aka Sami Ar Rahman. He is the first ever Radiant (Most valuable rank in Valorant) in Bangladesh, who has crossed the border and played in international tournaments. His potential and talent has mesmerized the world, making him the unstoppable SSSami. There’s another team who has made similar achievements by going to Dubai to play an International PUBG mobile tournament. The mobile operator Banglalink, was the promotional partner of A1 eSports, the first Bangladeshi competitive eSports team to qualify for the finals of the PUBG Mobile Global Championship, which was a huge milestone for the gamers of Bangladesh.

Games are like little bundles of joys to gamers. After a long day at school or a hectic day at work, video games give us a break from the busy monotonous schedule. If I was given endless time, I could talk about games and eSports all day long. Sadly we don't have never-ending time, thus, I’ll end my case here. Hopefully, a day will come when the world will acknowledge the gamers of Bangladesh. Till then, we will keep dreaming big. A little boy getting scolded for not doing his homework might become the next SSSami or a little girl carrying a heavy bag to school can become the next Uziboozie. No one can stop the dreams mixed with endless potential of a whole generation. So, keep dreaming gamers and Game on, Bangladesh!
